comment, opinion,

Following on from reports emanating out of Queensland’s GinGin of a pair of unmentionables caught attempting to light bushfires, it seems that citizens in many parts of the country are beginning to query the wisdom of charging such people merely with the crime of arson rather than that of terrorism. Surely, given the risks to life and limb along with the inevitable, catastrophic material damage, such morons don’t deserve any less than the full weight of the law. Likewise are concerns increasingly being raised about the great build up of combustables within our bushland areas, not only being allowed to accumulate, but it seems, being forced upon the wider community by almost all state and federal instrumentalities with a misguided concept of conservation. George A Lee, Devonport Twice in one week the Bass Highway has been blocked for several hours because of accidents at Black River and Sisters Creek. Funding has been allocated for a long overdue upgrade from Wynyard to Marrawah but nothing appears to be happening. The Smithton to Wynyard stretch of highway carries more heavy traffic than the Midlands Highway yet we are constantly treated as the poor country cousin. This section of road needs to be upgraded and made part of the National Highway. I realise Smithton does not qualify as a major city but it does qualify as Tasmania’s major economic hub. More produce is grown or processed in Circular Head than any other region in Tasmania and it’s about time that both state and federal governments start appreciating that fact. John McNab, Rocky Cape Something about our banking industry’s criminal conduct and our legislators response to it astonishes me. If an average punter goes into a bank and robs it, they will almost certainly go to jail after they have been convicted. Why is it that millions of dollars have been stolen from unsuspecting customers of these banks with the full knowledge of the bank management and the perpetrators of these crimes have been getting off scott free? And why have the managers of these banks been allowed to walk off into the sunset with their multi-million dollar payouts with no conviction or penalties whatsoever? You have to ask yourself, who is running this country, the politicians or the bankers? Or is that what all these banking donations to political parties pay for?

Twice in one week the Bass Highway has been blocked for several hours because of accidents at Black River and Sisters Creek.

Something about our banking industry’s criminal conduct and our legislators response to it astonishes me.

You have to ask yourself, who is running this country, the politicians or the bankers? Or is that what all these banking donations to political parties pay for?

Sue Bailey’s interview with Greens leader Cassy O’Connor gave me hope to know that the Greens is the only party that votes against extending harm in the community (Adv., Dec. 20). Congratulations to the Greens for always standing up for what matters – a sustainable future for all.

Councillor Dorsey is having a red hot go for Burnie and it’s great to see a supportive Mayor along with Councillor Simpson. They are part the reason why Burnie is such a great place to live. Bring on the “Put Burnie First” T-shirts.
