“This was a very positive development for KDS. The entire cargo will move through the port or Kolkata in barges. We thank the importer, handling agent, barge operators and all stakeholders for providing this additional cargo to the port facility. The discharge rate achieved was 6,000 tonne per day on an average,” KoPT chairman Vinit Kumar said.
KoPT handled 16.221 million tonne of traffic between April and June in the 2019-20 financial year, recording a growth of 6.5% over the same period in 2018-19. This was much higher than the combined growth rate or 1.52% registered by all major ports in India.
KDS handled 4.653 million tonnes in the first three months of this fiscal compared to 4.438 million tonnes between April and June 2018, thereby registering a growth of 4.8%.
This growth achieved by KoPT was due to vegetable oil, other liquid cargo, iron ore, other ore, fertiliser, fly ash, other coal/coke and gypsum among other items.
