Brazil’s Santos port will end this year with a new cargo record despite the effects of the pandemic on the global economy.
In January-November, South America’s busiest port handled 135Mt of cargo, up 8.7% year-on-year and surpassing the previous annual record set last year by 0.45%.
“The port of Santos sets a record and the month of November showed a recovery in the movement of containers, which was the sector most affected by the pandemic. By the end of the year, we expect minor growth of containers in 2020 compared to 2019,” said Santos port authority (SPA) president Fernando Biral in a press release.
In the first 11 months, solid bulk goods increased 14.9% y-o-y, while liquid bulk grew 10.7%. Containers saw a decrease of 0.3% to 3.8mn TEUs.
In November alone, containers saw the highest monthly movement with 395,500 TEUs, up 2% from the previous record set in August 2018, and increasing 10.6% over November last year.
Positive figures from Santos and other ports have prompted the government to press ahead with its plans of concessions and privatizations for the segment.
The pro-market administration of President Jair Bolsonaro is in the process of offering several port terminal concessions and looks to advance with the privatization of Santos, which is considered the crown jewel among Brazilian ports and handling a third of the country’s exports.
