HANOI, Dec 27 (dpa): Vietnamese authorities have seized 665 kilogrammes of cannabis from a cargo shipment sent from Singapore and over 90 kilogrammes of suspected rhino horn at a warehouse beside Ho Chi Minh City airport, state media has announced.
Police in Hai Phong, a major port city in northern Vietnam, discovered the large shipment of cannabis hidden in a container labelled as transporting animal feed, local newspaper VnExpress reported.
The package somehow made it through customs, with police only finding the illegal drugs four days later on Wednesday (Dec 23).
The sentence for transporting drugs in Vietnam ranges from one to 10 years in prison.
Meanwhile, authorities discovered 93 kilogrammes of suspected rhino horn in a large warehouse beside Tan Son Nhat airport in Ho Chi Minh City, local media reports.
The horns had been sent from the Philippines to Vietnam in 12 separate packages, with instructions left for further onwards shipment.
Police believe the horns originate from Africa, which means they would fetch a combined total of US$1.7 million on the black market.
In October 2019, a court in Ho Chi Minh City sentenced eight people to death for drug trafficking. – dpa
