Rumours of a foldable iPhone have been floating for a while and it seems like the ‘iPhone Flip’ might become a reality soon.
According to a leak by supply chain sources, Apple is looking at taking on Samsung and Motorola with a foldable phone of its own.
United Daily News cited sources and reported that Apple has asked its supplier Foxconn to supply two prototype shells with displays that fold. Both of these models are different from each other

One of the prototypes is akin to the Galaxy Z Fold and the Motorola Razr where it resembles a traditional flip phone. The prototype folds in half and works like the aforementioned phones by competitors.
The other prototype looks somewhat similar to the Galaxy Fold 2 or the Microsoft Surface Dup where two screens are held together by a hinge.
It isn’t clear which of the two models might end up being the final product as it is unsure whether Apple is working on two separate foldable models.
It could be possible that Apple is simply testing out both form factors as of now before ironing out the final design of a foldable iPhone.

Apple recently filed a patent that is quite different from every other foldable smartphone currently available in the market. In fact, it could change the foldable smartphone altogether if Apple follows through with its recent patent filing.
The filing shows a foldable device that can fold inward like the Galaxy Z Flip and outward like the Huawei Mate Xs. It is worthy to point out that the concept is just a patent right now and may not become a commercially viable product anytime soon.
Apple fans have been waiting for a foldable phone in response to Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola for a while, however, it seems like the foldable iPhone will not launch until 2022 at the earliest.
Supply chain leaks are quite common and it does not suggest anything final from Apple.
The leak just points at the fact that Apple is testing foldable devices, however, it might be a while until we see a final product by the Cupertino giant.

We should hopefully know more in the coming months if Apple is indeed serious about foldable phones. It could be possible Apple might go with either of the two designs mentioned or might go with a different strategy altogether.
