Qatar Airways Cargo is continuing to carry out sustainability related “positive and impactful actions” as part of its WeQare programme.
The actions are being implemented in the carrier’s cargo handling business and aim to make the its operations more sustainable.
The first ‘chapter’ of WeQare took place in July last year, when in response to the cornavirus outbreak, the carrier provided 1m kg of free cargo capacity for charities to transport medical supplies and humanitarian aid from July to December last year.
Qatar Cargo said the second chapter of WeQare will be announced this month.
A spokesperson for the carrier explained: “The cargo carrier’s employees are the driving force behind WeQare, a project that encourages cohesion and also provides a sense of fulfilment. All chapters launched throughout the programme are directly linked to everyday activities of the cargo carrier, its daily experience within the industry and its way of rethinking the business model, with sustainability as the main focus.”
Qatar Cargo’s chief officer cargo Guillaume Halleux recently told Air Cargo News: “It’s a very ambitious project. Through We Qare, we are implementing a series of concrete actions that are based on the four fundamental aspects of sustainability (the economy, the environment, society and culture) and that are tailored to our activities and to our everyday experiences.
“With We Qare, Qatar Airways Cargo hopes to create a sense of fulfilment within our industry — whether by supporting charities, reducing our carbon footprint, fighting to protect wildlife, or promoting equality, diversity, young people and culture.”
In 2019, Qatar Airways became the world’s largest international cargo carrier according to IATA statistics.
This leadership position is part of the reason that the airline decided to take a lead on sustainability.
“This position also comes with responsibilities,” said Halleux. “We are more than willing to shoulder these responsibilities. We want to set an example — from a business viewpoint, naturally, but also in terms of corporate social responsibility.”
“We Qare is fully in line with this aim and allows us to play a part in building tomorrow’s world — the ‘New Normal’.”
