A proposed Amazon warehouse in the town of Hamburg has taken another step forward after the town’s industrial development agency approved a tax break for Amazon.
The agency approved over 6 million dollars in tax breaks for the facility according to WGRZ.
Amazon has proposed building a 47 million dollar warehouse that would be located d on 62 acres at the Lake Erie Commerce Center at the intersections of Lake Shore and Bayview roads.
The proposed warehouse would also create around one hundred new jobs with half of those new jobs being part-time.
It was not a unanimous vote, the Hamburg IDA approved the project by a vote of 6-3.
The vote comes after several major politicians came out against the proposed project. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, State Senator Sean Ryan, and Assemblymember Jonathan Rivera all spoke out against the multi-million dollar tax incentives proposed for Amazon.
Hamburg IDA Vice-Chairman Robert Hutchison told WGRZ that the area needs entry-level positions.
“Entry level positions are something that we do need here and they may not be the best paying jobs, but they are certainly jobs that give people hope and opportunity and therefore I am behind this project,”
A proposed Amazon facility on Grand Island was rejected last December after residents of Grand Island spoke out against the warehouse. That project was a much larger facility and would have brought nearly 1000 jobs to the area.
Now that the facility and tax incentives have been approved by the Hamburg IDA, construction of the warehouse could start as soon as March of this year.
