One person was arrested Tuesday after Victoria police responded to a report of a break-and-enter at Dodd’s Furniture’s Garbally Road warehouse.
The break-in resulted in the loss of technical equipment that led to temporary closure of the facility — a major part of an estimated $10,000 in damage. Previously, four Dodd’s trucks parked in front of the warehouse had their windows smashed.
Marketing manager Brian Adam said the people involved in the break-in “got whatever they could grab,” including three WiFi nodes, which are vital to communication in the operation and used by warehouse workers and delivery drivers.
“They took some pricing guns and incidentals like that, stuff that would be no good to anybody else,” Adam said.
The loss of the WiFi nodes, valued at a total of about $2,300, led to the shutdown, he said. The back security fence was also damaged.
Police were called about 7:30 a.m. after staff observed part of the break-and-enter on surveillance video.
Owners provided them with an image of a suspect, and the arrest was made a short time later on Blanshard Street.
Many businesses have raised concerns about increased crime in the area since a temporary supportive-housing facility was opened nearby at the former Comfort Inn and Suites.
The province bought the building for $18.5 million to house people who had been living in tents in Topaz Park or on Pandora Avenue.
