The District Attorney’s Office in Bali’s Karangasem regency is investigating allegations of corruption against the region’s Social Agency involving a IDR2.9 billion (US$206,436) fund for a face masks procurement program.
The Social Agency was supposed to use the fund to buy and distribute face masks for free to the public. It’s unclear how much of the fund was misappropriated in the corruption scheme.
“There have been reports from the public regarding alleged misappropriation of funds intended for mask procurement by the Social Agency,” Karangasem District Attorney Aji Kalbu Pribadi said in a statement.
“The value of this procurement is IDR2.9 billion, and [the case is] being looked into by the intelligence unit of the Karangasem District Attorney’s Office.”
The office is also investigating two other cases of corruption, one involving a local tourist attraction and the other concerning house renovation projects in Tianyar.
Meanwhile on the other side of Bali, the district attorney in Buleleng recently named eight civil servants as suspects for alleged misappropriation of at least IDR656 million (US$46,697) from the region’s COVID-19 recovery fund.
The civil servants, all of whom worked at Buleleng’s Tourism Agency, reportedly marked up hotel fees in programs designed to boost local tourism amid the coronavirus pandemic.
