The Republic of Belarus stated that the country might ‘tackle’ cargo traffic from Lithuania and Latvia and these Baltic countries might lose a quarter of the transit as BelTA reported citing Alexander Lukashenko.
“As you report, about 40% of the trucks come from Lithuania and Latvia this year. It is a huge volume. If we tackle this flow, the logistic centers of Lithuania will not receive about a quarter,” Lukashenko said.
He also stated that Belarus and Russia discuss the re-orientation of the Belarusian freights (oil products, potassium fertilizers and other goods) from the Baltic direction to Ust-Luga port, Leningrad Oblast, Russia.
Lukashenko also asked how the customs committee sees the re-orientation of these frights and work of the Belarusian logistic centers due to this fact.
“We created powerful logistic centers. A lot of services, including those for our economic entities and economic entities of Eurasian Economic Union countries, are provided in Lithuania. But as far as I am informed, we can provide these services to the carriers in Belarus,” Lukashenko stated.
As we reported, after weeks of discussions, EU leaders agreed to impose sanctions on Belarus over controversial election results and the crackdown on protests in that country.
The sanctions against Belarus concern those involved in the falsification of the presidential election results and the brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrations after the August 9 elections.
