Coffee and donuts
Knead, the popular donut shop on Seventh Street, will be opening a second location at 5105 E. Pacific Coast Highway, previously the home of Jerry’s Donuts. While the opening was delayed, Amy Be — the daughter in the family-owned business — said, “We plan to open within the next week at two.”
Customer favorites like creme brûlée donuts, blueberry cronuts, Vietnamese coffee and zombie coffee drinks will be offered at the new location, Be said.
The latest closure of a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf location in Long Beach is at 4925 Second St.; the closure is noted on window signs as temporary, but the large lighted signage appears to have been removed. Belmont Shore Business Association executive director Dede Rossi said the storefront at had been listed for lease for several months prior to the closure.
The property, on the corner of Second Street and Argonne Avenue, has seen a variety of uses over the years. According to old phone books the property has served as an ice cream shop, a restaurant and bar and the popular Midnight Expresso before it became Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.
Port of Long Beach
Port officials reported that reduced demand and canceled orders continue to impact trade locally, with the Port of Long Beach seeing a 17% drop in volume — with about the same level of declines in both imports and exports — from April 2019 volume, which was the busiest April on record.
But officials continue to be optimistic about the long-term future.
“We look forward to a recovery stage and rebounding cargo shipments,” the port’s executive director Mario Cordero said, “as the nation contemplates relaxing shelter-in-place orders, people return to work and consumer demand rises – however it will not be in the short term.”
