A Surrey mother was walking her children home from school Tuesday when she was struck and killed by a runaway cargo van.
Mounties say at around 2:45 p.m., officers received a report of a collision involving two motor vehicles and a pedestrian near 144 Street and 61A Avenue.
Early indications are that an unoccupied cargo truck rolled into traffic where it struck a vehicle. The unoccupied cargo truck then continued travelling onto the sidewalk and struck the woman.
RCMP confirmed the victim was a mother who was out walking with her two children after school. The kids were not physically injured. Mounties say the department’s victim services has been asked to help out.
Paramedics attended and tried to revive the woman, but she died from her injuries.
Investigators say the driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police. They have confirmed the vehicle involved was a delivery vehicle but have not identified the company.
The delivery service is sometimes used by Amazon but it is not owned by the company.
In an emailed statement Wednesday Amazon said:
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time. We are working with law enforcement and the delivery service partner as they investigate.”
An investigation continues.
