The new report by Procurement Resource, a global procurement research and consulting firm, looks in-depth into the costs involved in the production of butene. The comprehensive report analyses the production cost of the material, covering raw material costs and co-product credit, equipment costs, land and site costs, labour wages, maintenance costs, financing charges, and the depreciation cost. The extensive study describes the step-wise consumption of material and utilities, along with a detailed process flow diagram. The report also assesses the latest developments within the butene industry that might influence the costs of production, looking into the capacity expansions, plant turnarounds, and mergers, acquisitions, and investments.

Butene, also known as butylene, is an organic compound that appears to be a colourless gas usually found in crude oil. It is widely used in the chemical industry to act as a monomer for polybutene, which further has more specialised applications. Butene is commonly used to make copolymers.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing companies to adopt extensive measures in order to save their assets, some companies have opted the method of merging assets. Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC) is one such organisation, which has successfully merged its two affiliates, Saudi Petrochemical Company and Arabian Petrochemical Company, in order to increase their efficiency. Such a measure to increase their efficiency will also result in the increasing production of butene. Meanwhile, in China, the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) is planning to launch a mega-size integrated oil refinery complex by merging its Daqing and Harbin refineries together in order to focus on the production of chemicals like butylene. These factors are expected to influence the production cost for butene.

The production cost report by Procurement Resource assesses the production of butene via ethylene or via Raffinate streams. One of the most common methods to produce butene is from ethylene via dimerization. In this process, two monomers of the same elements combine together to form a compound. In this case, two monomers of ethylene combine to form butene. The conditions are provided by a stream cracker.
