Walmart Gives Rival Amazon a Tough Fight, Debuts Drone Delivery

Walmart partnered with Zipline for drone delivery and initiated the usage of renewable energy to address climate change. Uber entered the enterprise market, while Amazon took care of the “smartphone-in-trees” scam. 

Walmart Pilots Drone Delivery With Flytrex; And With Zipline in the U.S.

After announcing a partnership with the end-to-end drone delivery company, Flytrex, last week, Walmart has begun an initiative in the U.S. in partnership with Zipline for drone delivery. The company plans to make on-demand deliveries of health and wellness products and will soon expand to general merchandise.

In another news, the retail company joined hands with energy management and automation company, Schneider Electric to receive access to renewable energy for Walmart’s suppliers based in the U.S. as a step to address climate change. The company announced its Gigaton PPA (GPPA) Program, which aims to educate Walmart suppliers about renewable energy purchases and accelerate its adoption.

Uber Unveils Uber Freight Enterprise and Uber Freight Link

Uber has unveiled two enterprise software solutions this week —  Uber Freight Enterprise and Uber Freight Link, that will enable large shippers to leverage a central point of control for logistic operations. Aimed at enhancing the existing TMS and WMS systems, the solutions will deliver efficient end-to-end freight management at enterprise scale.

Amazon Curbs Drivers’ Attempts to Fool Delivery System

At the beginning of last week, Amazon’s delivery stations witnessed smartphones dangling from trees. This came off as an attempt by the contract delivery drivers to get the upper hand over rivals seeking orders. Later the contract drivers admitted to experiencing a change in delivery orders as the company changed the way it assigns orders.

Volvo Trucks Shakes Hands With Samsara

Transport solutions provider, Volvo Trucks, has signed a memorandum of understanding with IoT company, Samsara. As part of the agreement, Volvo will investigate options for achieving more connected, efficient operations for customers by providing an all-encompassing, single-source telematics service including compliance services, cameras, trailer sensors, safety, and maintenance services which will be available via Samsara’s platform.

SaaS-based fleet management company, Omnitracs, has entered an agreement to acquire video-based safety and transportation intelligence company, SmartDrive. Together, the companies will deliver an industry-first converged, end-to-end platform that will optimize safety and enhance driver productivity and workflow.

Erik Caldwell Joins XPO Logistics as President of Last Mile

Last mile logistics provider, XPO Logistics, announced that the company has appointed Erik Caldwell as president of its last mile business unit for the U.S. and Canada region. Caldwell had joined XPO as a chief operating officer, supply chain for Americas and the Asia Pacific in 2017. He comes with 16 years of experience.
