Official data showed that the cargo throughput at ports in China increased 8.8 percent in 2019 since a year earlier to set at 13.95 billion tons.
The Chinese Ministry of Transport (MOT) said that the foreign trade cargo throughput made up 4.32 billion tons of the total in the year, representing a rise of 4.8 percent.
The container throughput at ports saw 4.4 percent rise to about 261.1 million TEUs in the period.
The MOT has increased the statistical range from main ports to all ports in China at the start of 2019.
The cargo throughput expansion at ports was attributable to the steady growth the waterway freight volume in the country, which rose 6.3 percent since a year ago to reach 7.47 billion tons in 2019.
