The Rochester Fire Department responded to an ammonia leak early Saturday morning at the Seneca Freezer Warehouse, 308 20th St. SE.
Six units responded after the report of a “strong ammonia leak” was made shortly before 3 a.m.
The first crews to arrive found pockets of ammonia smell immediately outside the warehouse, according to a fire department report. The fire department’s Chemical Assessment Team was sent to the scene to monitor for hazards and conditions were found that didn’t require alerting neighbors.
Streets surrounding the area were blocked off to avoid exposure to hazards, and the leak was eventually found on the roof top of the Seneca building. Once the leak was stopped, streets were cleared and declared safe from hazards.
Rochester Police and Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
