A WAGGA girl is on a mission to help fight cancer as COVID-19 continues to take a toll on charities’ ability to fundraise. Ten-year-old Ariba Omar has been volunteering her time to help raise money for the Cancer Council since she was just four years old, and this year is no different. “Since COVID-19 struck, I haven’t been able to do as much volunteering as normal, and I love doing that, so I found a new way to help,” she said. Miss Omar created a fundraising platform online for the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day alongside her mother, asking the community to enter a photo of their past experiences with Daffodil Day for a five dollar entry fee. Two winners will be picked on Friday to receive a $50 gift voucher, and Miss Omar said every dollar counts. “A don’t think charities are able to get as much support this year as money is tight for lots of people and there are many restrictions, so I have set a goal of $200 and we have $67 already,” she said. Miss Omar’s passion for helping others stems from her love of talking with and meeting new people. “I love engaging with others and helping charities, but I particularly love the Cancer Council because a lot of people are dying from cancer which is sad,” she said. “There’s no cure found yet and I feel like cancer is just as bad or worse than COVID-19 with the amount of people dying. “I want to be a cancer specialist when I grow up.” To donate or enter, visit www.daffodilday.com.au/fundraiser/sabanabi.
