BENGALURU: In a step to move temperature-sensitive cargo, mainly pharmaceutical products during the Covid crisis, the Kempegowda International Airport’s (KIA) cargo wing has introduced a new cold-chain solution for air cargo. Air India SATS inside the airport complex will be handling the new storage services.
According to an official release from Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), operators of KIA, the introduction of Envirotainer, a leader in active cold-chain solutions for air cargo, will provide customers with advanced temperature-controlled air cargo solutions mainly in shipment of pharma products from Bengaluru to different parts of the globe.
With the new addition, Bengaluru airport becomes the fourth airport in the country and second in south India to introduce the Envirotainer. This enables pharmaceutical companies and their logistics partners to move temperature-sensitive cargo across the world by maintaining the quality of products throughout the journey.
Backed by two dedicated cold zones, operated by Air India SATS Airport Services (AI-SATS) and Menzies Aviation Bobba Bangalore (MABB), the new cold-chain solution in Bengaluru will boost the movement of pharmaceutical products from major manufacturing clusters such as Hyderabad, Goa, Visakhapatnam and other locations in southern India.
Pharmaceutical products account for 13 percent of the total international cargo being lifted from Bengaluru airport each year, with the US, Europe, Australia, Canada, Russia and countries in Asia and Africa being the top destinations, the release said.
