There were around 8,000 units of the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer across U.S. dealerships at the start of January, GM Authority has learned. This as a noteworthy improvement of about 1,500 vehicles on the ground in early December.
It’s vital for Chevy Trailblazer to reach healthy inventory levels, since the vehicle is heading toward becoming one of the latest success stories for Chevrolet and parent General Motors. Though the figures do not appear impressive at first sight, there are all kinds of factors to consider. First, the crossover did not go on sale in the U.S. market until roughly May, by which time production at the GM Bupyeong plant in Incheon, South Korea was already being affected by issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a shortage of wiring harnesses shipped to Incheon from a supplier in the Philippines.
In August, GM Authority exclusively reported that the Chevy Trailblazer sat on dealer lots for less time than any other new vehicle sold in the U.S. The period between the Trailblazer’s arrival on dealer lots and sale time was 36 days, well below the 60-day period considered to be optimal, suggesting that supply (which was much lower than intended, as explained above) was being dwarfed by demand. In the early days of a new model, this metric is more meaningful than raw sales numbers.
GM is now looking to continue growing Chevy Trailblazer inventory for the remainder of January and into February, which will almost inevitably lead to an increase in sales volume given strong interest and demand. In order to do this, production of the popular Chevrolet Trax, which is also built at Incheon, will be reduced by 30 percent in 2021, allowing the facility to build more examples of the Trailblazer.
Though cutting production of a vehicle which sold 106,299 units in the U.S. in 2020 in favor of one which didn’t reach 35,000 may seem counter-intuitive at first, but the trend is clear: the Trailblazer is rapidly winning new buyers, and is well on its way to becoming one of the most popular GM vehicles in the U.S. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Trailblazer outsell the Trax, availability and inventory allowing.
