RAIPUR: Amidst farmers agitation against farm laws and demand for a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP), Chhattisgarh has set a record of procuring more than 92 lakh metric tonnes of paddy under the MSP scheme during the current Kharif year.
A record number of 95.38 per cent of the total registered paddy farmers have sold paddy crop under MSP.
During the last assembly polls, the Congress had promised to the famers to procure their paddy at a price of Rs 2500 per quintal and later the state procured it under the support price and also launched a new scheme—Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana, a customized scheme of the Congress party’s much publicised Nyay Yojana.
The schemes appears to have evoked good response among farmers in Chhattisgarh as the state as 20.53 lakh farmers, out of the total registered 21.52 lakh farmers, have sold paddy under MSP scheme during the procurement season, which is ending on Sunday. The state also broke the record of last 20 years by procuring more than 92 lakh metric tonnes of paddy this season.
Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel said the state government made adequate arrangements for the purchase of paddy, despite many adverse circumstances. Availability of gunny bags was ensured through several alternative arrangements to overcome the shortage of gunny bags. Payments to farmers were continuous, without any major delays.
There has been a significant increase in the area of farming and farming in the state in the last two years. Due to the farmer-friendly policies of the state government, the area of registration of paddy cultivation has reached more than 27 lakh hectares, he added.
After coming to power in December 2018, Bhupesh Baghel government had waived off farm loans and irrigation tax. Later, the state began providing Rs 10,000 per acre of agricultural input assistance under Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana.
Under this scheme, farmers of the state are being provided direct assistance of Rs 5750 crore. The amount of three instalments has also been transferred to the farmers’ accounts and the fourth instalment amount will be transferred by March 2021.
