Ludhiana: A couple was killed after a mini cargo van ran into their motorcycle in Birmi village, near Sidhwan Canal, on Tuesday.
Gurcharan Singh, 48, and his wife, Amandeep Kaur, 42 — residents of Detwal village — were on way to Tagore Public School, Birmi, to attend a parent-teacher meeting.
Gurcharan’s cousin, Mohan Singh, said, “Around 9am, Gurcharan, a farmer, and Amandeep, a homemaker, left for the school, where both their children study. While their daughter is a Class XI student, their son studies in UKG. When they entered the main road from an internal lane, a speeding cargo van hit their bike, killing them on the spot.”
Passersby called up the police. The couple was taken to civil hospital, where they were declared brought dead.
Following the crash, the pick-up van driver fled, leaving his vehicle behind.
PAU police station SHO inspector Paramdeep Singh said, “There are no eyewitnesses. It seems when the bike entered the main road, the cargo van failed to notice it, as trees line up the roadside, and rammed into it.”
A case has been registered under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC. “We are on the look out for the cargo van driver,” the SHO added.
