The first ever cultural event to protect and promote culture as well as tradition organized by Surokhum Pumji wastoday at Longthonger Yangdong Surokhum, Longthonger Village.
The event was graced by T Seopi Sangtam President, United Sangtam Likhum Pumji (USLP) and was attended by village elders and public leaders.
Addressing the event, T Seopi Sangtam said that in the present fast evolving global society, as a tribe, it has become even more important for the tribe to protect and hand down the rich culture values and traditions to the next generation.
Expressing appreciation to the Surokhum Pumji for organizing such a cultural program, Seopi called on the gathering to emulate and learn from the rich cultural heritage of the past.
“In the same manner, the traditional knowledge about sustainable living, medicine, farming and architecture that tribal store in their memories can also be documented for preservation and dissemination,” he said.
Seopi also stated that culture can encourage the community over the years to create a localized database and archive its oral and traditional knowledge, art as well as culture.
Also speaking at the event, Yangseo Sangtam, public leader, said it is the responsibility of the present generation to safeguard their culture and tradition which their forbearers has handed down to them.
He also said that if people fail to protect their culture today there will come a time where tomorrow’s generation will not know about their own rich culture and tradition.
He further called upon the gathering to maintain unity as progress and development can only take place when there is unity.
Welcoming the gathering, B Ariba Chairman, Surokhum Pumji said the cultural program is being organized to let the younger generation learn about the culture and tradition of their ancestors.
The festival saw the performance of folksong from Atparu Mulong and Village guard Mulong. Ancient rituals recitation was delivered by Chimkimong DB and Kiuthrongba.
The program was led by Yangthsaba and Sekhumla while a special song was presented by Longthonger Village Students Union.
