Electricity procurement contracts down 11% in December

Electricity procurement contracts in December 2019 saw 47 contracts announced, marking a drop of 11% over the last 12-month average of 53, according to GlobalData’s power industry contracts database.

This is according to the research company who further noted that the proportion of contracts by category tracked by the firm in December was as follows:

1. Power Purchase Agreement: 36 contracts and a 76.6% share
2. Project Implementation: seven contracts and a 14.9% share
3. Electricity Supply: four contracts and an 8.5% share

Europe leading electricity procurement activity in December 2019

Comparing contracts activity in electricity procurement segment in different regions of the globe, Europe held the top position with 18 contracts and a share of 38.3% during December 2019, followed by North America with ten contracts and a 21.3% share and Asia-Pacific with nine contracts and a 19.1% share.

Solar is leading technology for electricity procurement

Among the technologies, solar accounted for 31 contracts
with a 64.6% share, followed by wind with 14 contracts and a 29.2% share and
thermal with one contract and a 2.1% share.

The top issuers of electricity procurement contracts for
the month in terms of power capacity involved were:

1. Egyptian Electricity Transmission (Egypt): 700MW from two contracts
2. Amazon Web Services (United States): 321MW from three contracts
3. Statkraft (Norway): 252MW capacity from one contract.
