April 1 (Renewables Now) – South African utility Eskom Holdings SOC could purchase less electricity generated by independent wind parks in the coming days because it currently has a lot more capacity than required.
A representative for the company told Reuters it has informed contracted wind farms of a possible curtailment of power procurement for a few hours a day during the next few days. The reason for this is the fall in electricity demand arising from the coronavirus-related lockdown in the country.
According to the debt-laden utility, demand has plunged by over 7,500 MW since Friday, when the lockdown was initiated.
The spokesperson has pointed out that the affected wind parks will be compensated for their losses.
