France’s decision to close its border to cargo carriers from the United Kingdom over the spread of a new strain of COVID-19 in Britain has in part stopped delivery of food and medicines, British news portal The Guardian reports.
Alongside the travel bans of most EU member states, France introduced the ban on passenger, freight and cargo movement on its border with the UK on Sunday, December 20. While the EU is working on a coordinated response the new mutation of COVID-19 in the UK, no date has yet been set for when the restrictions would be lifted.
On Monday, December 21, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said 20% of food, medicines and other goods passing through British ports had been blocked by Paris’s decision, triggering government crisis plans at the port city of Dover and other major pinch points.
Speaking after a meeting of the government’s emergency Cobra committee, Johnson said he had stressed in a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron the need to reopen the supply chains between the continent and the UK, The Guardian reports.
