Ricky Jadoo guided General JN to a dominant victory in the Sian’s Gold Sprint, as the 2021 Trinidad and Tobago horse racing opened at Santa Rosa Park, Arima on Friday.
Favorite Early Bird made a fast start opening up a length lead over General JN but Jadoo had closed the gap with 400 meters to go.
Turning into the straight, Jadoo edged General JN ahead and fought off a token challenge by 2018 winner Thisonesforron to win by 3 3/34 lengths.
Early Bird faded to third, while Cool Cat was fourth. Rio Ponti was a late scratch.
Jamaican-bred General JN is owned by Jerry Narace and trained by Glenn Mendez.
2020 champion jockey Brian Boodramsingh won three races on the day, taking Race 3 (With Honors), Race 4 (Manos Ariba), and Race 6 (Super Bird).
Champion apprentice and 2020 Triple Crown winner Kimal Santo won the opening race of the new season aboard Chevan Maharaj’s Maha Raja.
Maha Raja was trained by 2020 champion trainer John O’Brien, who also saddled two other winners on the day (With Honors and Super Bird).
The 2021 season began with a six-race card, with the Grade III Sian’s Gold Sprint as the featured race.
