The Hanover High gymnastics team three-peated as Patriot League champs.
The Hanover High gymnastics team is no stranger to success.
In fact, on Feb. 4, the Indians wrapped up their third consecutive Patriot League title.
Hanover appears to be peaking at the right time with the south sectionals slated for Feb. 22 and the state finals on Feb. 29 (both at Algonquin Regional). The Indians clinched the league title by tallying a season-high score (136.25).
“We have had many of the same gymnasts the past few years and we have worked to increase our skills and bonus in our routines each year,” said Hanover coach Keriann Hart. “With the increase in skills in bonus we have had many girls achieve career-high scores.”
Hanover is led by senior captains Abigail Daley, Paige Leigh and junior captain Kayleen Boutin. Boutin was recently named the MVP of the league. Daley and Leigh are contributors on the vault, bars and beam. Continuing a tradition started by Abby Stone, who graduated last year, the captains begin every meet with a pre-game pep talk.
“(The captains) have all excelled inside the gym and in the classroom,” said Hart. “They all take their captain role seriously and have been there to motivate the team and have provided a positive atmosphere for our team to succeed.”
The contributors don’t end with the captains. Delanie Condon and Holly Rossi earned Patriot League All-Star honors.
Rossi, although only a freshman, has competed all-around since joining the team. When Hanover clinched the league title with wins over Pembroke/Silver Lake and Whitman-Hanson, Rossi tallied career highs in every event.
Condon and junior Emma Butzbach compete in the bars, beam and floor. Condon has broken her personal record in the beam in three consecutive meets. Her tally sits at 9.2. Butzbach was Hanover’s winner of the Patriot League Scholar Athlete Award.
“Emma is one of my most consistent competitors and I know I can always rely on her,” said Hart.
Ania Bramowska is another talented rookie. She’s consistently competed in the floor and vault, plus sporadic appearances on bars.
“She definitely has the potential to be an all-around athlete and I look forward to seeing her grow as a gymnast over the next few years,” said Hart.
Junior Jordan Tandler is in her third year competing in multiple events. In the league-title clinching wins, she scored a career high in the vault (9.05).
“Jordan is another one of my athletes that is always trying to improve in practices and very rarely is seen sitting around during practices,” said Hart.
Sophomore Erin Obreza is a beam specialist while freshman Aria Riba competes in the vault. Her first vault experience came during a meet this season. Having never competed in the event, Ariba did a practice run in warm-ups and has found a spot in the lineup at times this season.
Mischa DeVincent, Alanda Gasdia, Fiza Mehmood, Bridget Monahan, Gianna Rizzo and Isabel Suchoff have also contributed to the team. Monahan won the team’s Patriot League Sportsmanship Award.
“Our strength is how well our team works together and supports one another,” said Hart. “They are always helping each other in practices and pushing each other to improve. I also believe that my team is great at supporting other teams in our league by cheering for many of the other gymnasts.”
