Irami Osei-Frimpong, a doctoral student at the University of Georgia, weighed in on efforts to unionize at an Amazon warehouse in Alabama, saying it’s a tense moment that puts workers at risk.
Osei-Frimpong, a YouTube host who goes by the name the Funky Academic, said voting for union certification could result in the warehouse closing down.
He said it would be better to include an “opt-out” option that does not get “good people to vote against their interests.”
Ballots were sent out earlier this month in one of the most significant union elections of the last decade. The almost 6,000 workers in Bessemer will vote on whether to form what would be the first union at a U.S. based Amazon facility.
