Japan Airlines (JAL) has implemented CHAMP’s API Gateway solution to power a new domestic air cargo service.
CHAMP Cargosystems said this will enable the carrier to compete with other modes of transport and seamless integrate air and land options for its customers. JAL will also be able to offer capacity to its business partners by allowing them to match shipment requests from shippers with available flights.
The solution enables the airline to use a suite of APIs that connect its new domestic service to Cargospot, the airline’s cargo management system, developed and operated by CHAMP.
The API integration allows for instant end-to-end quotation for customers by matching and combining various air-to-air and land transportation options. The APIs also allow partners to offer multiple services, including checking for flight availability and managing bookings, thereby significantly raising JAL’s third-party distribution capability.

The API Gateway solution was implemented remotely under eight weeks—from concept to live, according to CHAMP.
“CHAMP has delivered truly innovative solution,” says Yasunari Taniguchi, vice president, administration, cargo & mail at Japan Airlines Cargo.
“Instead of arranging land and air transportation separately, and manually comparing the different options, the power of CHAMP’s APIs now allows us to connect and provide an easier and seamless end-to-end proposition to our valued customers. We are delighted with the smooth roll-out and business transformation, and with the excellent cooperation of CHAMP’s delivery team,” Taniguchi added.
“We are pleased to support JAL in this exciting project, allowing the airline’s customers to book across an end-to-end transportation chain,” says Lee Booth, VP global products at CHAMP Cargosystems.
“Our APIs are helping JAL to accelerate digitalization and create new business streams through these latest technologies,” he added.
2020 saw the launch of JAL’s new CHAMP-designed digital cargo business platform—the first of its kind in Japan—which is now available to all of the airline’s customers, across all airports in Japan.
On the ground, the digital processes are further enhanced through CHAMP’s advanced mobile app, fully integrated with CHAMP’s Cargospot suite of solutions.
