Mattannur: Cargo service will commence at Kannur international airport soon. Recently, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has granted approval to the airport for operating cargo services.
Following this, KIAL MD V Thulasi Das summoned a virtual meeting of airlines companies and representatives of various export companies.
With the commencement of the cargo service, the number of flight services in Kannur airport will be increased. Along with the passenger flights, cargo flights will land at Kannur in the coming days.
If the authority grants permission for foreign airlines, more goods will be transported through flights from Kannur. Through this, KIAL aims to increase revenue.
Months back, the airport authority has established basic facilities for cargo complex. An agency was also selected through tender for operating cargo service.
Once, the customs department deploy the necessary staff to Kannur airport, cargo service will commence immediately.
A cargo centre of 1200 square feet which can handle 12,000-tonne goods is arranged at the airport here.
In the first phase, domestic and international goods will be transported through the cargo service from Kannur airport. Once, the construction of an international cargo complex gets completed, the present cargo centre will be utilized for domestic cargo service. A cold storage facility to store fruits, vegetable, flowers, medicine, fish and meat will be arranged here.
If agriculture crops find market in foreign countries, the agriculture sector will turn more profitable. Exporting goods which have a huge demand in Gulf countries will also strengthen trade relations. Hence, it is examined that the establishment of goods procurement centres near the airport will upgrade Kannur airport as an air cargo hub in future.
Meanwhile, the construction of KINFRA industrial park which eyes revenue from exports is on progress in Kannur.
