Of residents in LTC homes, I say ‘Get ’em out!’, Jan. 30
Rosie DiManno covers all the important points of what is wrong with long-term care (LTC).
As she points out, before the pandemic elder care was not a priority, and I would argue based on the way the Ford government has mishandled it, elder care is still not its priority.
The government approved more beds in for-profit LTC facilities that have major outbreaks and deaths; his government has not looked at alternatives despite the fact that seniors clearly state they do not want to end up in LTC institutions; and the yearly inspections and follow-up are not completed.
DiManno points out it would take a seismic shift in thinking about how best to provide elder care.
I agree. It’s time to move from warehousing seniors to compassionate, community care. Seniors don’t have time to wait.
