LINCOLN — Nebraska’s Dec. 1 inventory of all hogs and pigs was 3.75 million head, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The total was 6 percent from Dec. 1, 2018 — unchanged since Sept. 1, 2019 — and included 440,000 breeding hogs and 3.31 million market hogs.
The September-November 2019 Nebraska pig crop of 2.22 million head was down slightly from 2018.
Sows farrowing, at 190,000, were down 3 percent, but the pigs saved per litter, at 11.7, compared to 11.45 in September-November 2018.
Nebraska producers have indicated they intend to farrow 190,000 sows again in the December 2019- February 2020 quarter, which would be up 3 percent from the same period a year ago.
