Lane County Waste Management now is offering signs and informational material to multi-tenant facilities meant to reduce recycling contamination.
The pilot program, available for property owners with five or more units using shared garbage collection, provides decals for waste bins labeling what can be recycled, as well as guides which can be provided to tenants through handouts and posters, according to Lane County Waste Management.
State law requires landlords at multifamily residences provide recycling service along with garbage services in Eugene, Springfield, Creswell, Florence and residents in their urban growth boundaries. Lane County has amended code regulations to be in compliance with this law.
The Lane County Waste Reduction Program also is asking owners and managers of multifamily properties to participate in other pilot projects, which would provide them with free education resources and tools to help tenants recycle correctly. Owners and managers, in return, will provide oversight and reporting on those programs for one year, according to Lane County Waste Management.
Interested property owners or managers can register by filling out the survey at lanecounty.org/multifamilyrecycling.
“Lane County residents clearly feel recycling is very important, and renters should have equal access,” Lane County Waste Reduction Specialist Sarah Grimm said in a news release. “We know from research conducted by Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality that we still have high levels of improper recycling, so several free resources are available now and the pilot projects will test additional advanced resources.”
