Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Opposition intends to file a Motion of No Confidence against Energy Minister Franklin Khan, as well as bring forward a Private Member’s Bill to repeal changes made to procurement legislation.
Speaking at a UNC virtual meeting last night, Persad-Bissessar said Pointe-a-Pierre MP David Lee intends to file a Motion of No Confidence against Energy Minister Franklin Khan when Parliament convenes on Friday.
Further, she said she intends to file a Bill to repeal amendments made to procurement legislation.
‘I want to serve notice today that I intend to file a Bill to repeal the amendments made to the Procurement Act.’
‘It is my respectful view that that Bill must appear on the Order Paper so that we can debate it. It’s even more important based on government’s decision to put Petrotrin’s assets on the open market. We have been telling them you cannot sell out the people’s patrimony. Bring the procurement law into effect so we can be sure there’s accountability and transparency.’
She accused government of ‘weaken[ing] the law to allow for certain people to thief from taxpayers’ via procurement amendments.
The development comes after government’s rejection of proposals put forward by Patriotic Energies and Technologies Co. Ltd. (Patriotic) for the Petrotrin refinery.
Finance Minister Colm Imbert said the decision was made because the terms offered were too ‘onerous’, while the OWTU President General, Ancil Roget, refuted this statements, saying there would be no undue burden to government.
Government indicated that it would be issuing requests for proposals in due course to seek bidders on the open market.
