The Indian ministry of ports, shipping and waterways (MoPSW) plans to create product-specific warehouses and silos at various ports, multi-modal logistics parks located near ports and alongside the national waterways. The purpose is to reduce the storage losses, minimise logistics costs and facilitate distribution of cargo in the hinterland.
MoPSW is aiming to develop this infrastructure for products like cement, liquid, chemicals, refrigerated items, electronic products, pharmaceuticals, auto spares parts and components.
While big players have their own warehouses and storage space, smaller ones find it difficult to get their products stored at various locations. The development of this infrastructure will boost to small logistics players, according to an official release.
The plans is part of the Sagarmala Programme, which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.This is the flagship programme of the ministry to promote port-led development in the country by harnessing potential of the 7,500-km long coastline and the nearly 21,000-km navigable waterways.
