Liquefied natural gas (LNG) company Qatargas has achieved a milestone with the delivery of the 2,000th LNG cargo to India’s Dahej Terminal.

The cargo was transported onboard conventional LNG vessel Aseem and was loaded with natural gas at the Ras Laffan Port.

Owned and operated by Petronet, the LNG terminal is located at Dahej in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The first jetty of the terminal can handle berthing of up to Q-Flex vessels while the second can handle berthing of up to Q-Max vessels.

With six LNG storage tanks and other vaporisation facilities, the terminal meets 40% of the total gas demand of the country.

Qatargas CEO Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani said: “We are delighted to reach this historic milestone in our relationship with India with whom we have established a strong partnership since July 1999. India is a key market for Qatargas, given its geographical proximity and growth potential.”

Built in 2009, Aseem has a capacity of 155,000m³. Currently sailing under the flag of Malta, the LNG carrier was built by Samsung Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries.

Khalid bin Khalifa Al Thani further added:  “As India continues to make big strides towards achieving its ambitious target of 15% natural gas in the country’s overall energy mix, we are committed to extending all possible support by reliable delivery of this clean fuel.

“As the world’s premier LNG company, Qatargas continues to play a major role in ensuring energy security for countries across the globe.”

Qatargas and Petronet have signed a 25-year long-term free-on-board (FOB) sale and purchase agreement (SPA).

The company loads more than 116 cargoes a year to India under this SPA besides supplying significant volumes into the short-term markets.

Qatargas supplied a commissioning LNG cargo for India’s newest LNG receiving terminal in Ennore near Chennai in March.
