MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The family of a man killed working at FedEx has hired a law firm that will conduct an independent investigation of his death.
Records suggest that Wednesday’s fatal workplace accident at the FedEx hub was not the first time safety inspectors have been called to the facility due to a death.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Duntate Young’s death this past week was the third death at the facility since 2015.
In fact, inspectors were here in Memphis just last month looking into safety practices.
Young was reportedly working at the hub when the incident took place. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he later died.
The state was notified about what it calls a “fatal workplace accident” and sent an inspector to the facility to figure out what happened. They said the details of that investigation will be released to the public after the probe is completed and closed.
Duntate’s family has hired the Cochran Firm to represent them. Attorneys said in a release Friday that they will conduct an independent investigation to determine how and why Duntate died.
“To date, Federal Express has been uncooperative in our attempts to gather information on behalf of Duntate’s family,” the firm’s attorneys said. “This family deserves answers.”
Authorities have not released a cause of death.
A FedEx spokesman said the investigation is ongoing and will last as long as it takes to get the facts. The company is cooperating and providing video.
FedEx employs about 11,000 people in the package-handling section of the company.
