ST. PETERSBURG — Jonathan Daou, who has invested heavily in the city’s Edge District, is now looking westward to the Warehouse Arts District. This month, Daou paid $2.075 million for the Marine Center at 2233 3rd Ave. S near the Brocante Vintage Market and 3 Daughters Brewing.
Known for its huge mural of dolphins and sea turtles, the 28,000-square-foot building dates to 1959 and has been home to marine-related businesses. Daou will rename it “The St. Pete Mercantile” and offer low rents and collaborative space to “makers and artists, fabricators and food/beverage makers.”
Despite its age, the building is up to code and “no substantial renovations are required at the moment,” Daou said. As for the mural, he said he has spoken with its creators, the Vitale brothers, about painting a new mural more in keeping with the building’s new purpose.
