Weatherford ISD plans to use federal safety and security grant money to obtain a records management system.
At the end of last month, WISD received a $78,323 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice by the STOP School Violence Act. The grant is aimed at improving school safety and security measures districtwide.
The grant is responsible for training school staff and educating students about violence prevention and developing and operating anonymous reporting systems, threat assessment and intervention teams and special training to help staff respond to mental health crises, according to the Bureau of Justice Assistance’s website.
WISD will use the grant to expand community and student safety awareness, including through “community safety summits and school events to provide our stakeholders with information about warning signs of violence so that parents and students know when to report concerning behaviors to school officials,” according to a press release from the district.
The grant will also facilitate safety and security case management, protocols and practices to improve the effectiveness of WISD’s safety and security initiatives, according to the release.
WISD Safety and Security Executive Director Bruno Dias said the grant money will go toward a records management system that facilitates case management, records management system training expenses, visual aids to facilitate the positive school climate campaign and professional campaign material design to facilitate the safety summit.
Details about safety summits and school events are in the planning process, Dias said.
The competitive grant program was open to school districts and police agencies in the U.S., Dias said.
“The application required budget planning and a needs assessment that aligned items to be purchased with our safety and security objectives/grant criteria,” Dias said.
Weatherford Police Department Chief Lance Arnold said the grant will lead to more safety and security enhancements.
“WPD and WISD have a long-standing strong partnership. We share the same goals regarding the safety and security of our students, staff, visitors and campuses and we work side by side with the district every day to achieve and surpass those goals,” Arnold said. “I have been completely impressed with the accomplishments of Bruno Dias, the WISD executive director of safety and security, in just a short amount of time. I have no doubt the grant will lead to even greater enhancements to the safety and security measures at WISD.”
